Pushing Hands is said to be the gateway for students to physically experience and thus comprehend the different aspects of internal martial arts training such as leverage, reflexes, sensitivity, timing, coordination and positioning.

Pushing hands is normally practised in pairs.  It helps improve focus, coordination and positioning. Training with a partner allows a student to develop "listening power", the sensitivity to feel the direction and strength of a partner's intention. Students develop the skill to spontaneously respond to external forces.  Therefore, are able to effectively defend and attack when necessary.
