Teaching
Traditionally for the Shaolin monk, the purpose of developing external strength was to reinforce the internal strength and thus enhancing their spiritual practice. Staying consistent with this tradition, Shifu Yan Xiu classes aim to maximise both the mental focus and physical strength as well as to improve overall health and fitness.
Students are encouraged to train hard with self-awareness, and a pure heart and mind, all qualities that are a reflection of Shifu Yan Xiu's teaching approach.
Classes are suitable for everyone of all ages and at all levels, from the beginner to the advanced. It is a misconception that a high level of stamina, strength and flexibility are necessary. These will naturally develop as you progress in your training.
What to Expect
Generally, classes will begin with warm up exercises and this will be followed with the practice of basic moves and stances. You are then taught a specific Shaolin form, step by step. It is essential to perform the basics with a certain degree of competence before moving on. Therefore repetition forms a significant part of the training to ensure you gain and are able to maintain a high level of skill in what you learn.
Classes are enjoyable but do require hard work and commitment if you want to progress. Effort and consistency on your part is needed if you want to achieve maximum benefit from the training.
Benefits of Shaolin Kung Fu
Studying martial arts has many benefits for people of all ages, physical and mental or spiritual. Designed to improve the entire person instead of focusing on improving one aspect of health.
Maintain a healthy weight
Participating in Shaolin Kung Fu will increase movement and burn calories, making it possible to lose excess weight and body fat.
Increased mobility
Many people are stuck behind a desk all day. This inhibits their ability to move with a full range of motion. Shaolin Kung Fu exercises will put the joints of the body through their full range of motion, increasing mobility and flexibility.
Increased concentration
There is great focus necessary in the practice and mastering of Shaolin Kung Fu. Students participating in classes from qualified teachers will learn how to accomplish more than they thought possible with exercises designed to improve their minds at the same time as their bodies.
Spiritual connections
There is more to Shaolin Kung Fu than just physical exercise. The history and tradition of this martial art, originally developed by monks, will open the practitioners' spiritual side as it improves their body.
Longevity
Improvements in mental and physical health go well beyond just improving a person's attitude and appearance. Regular exercise can boost the immune system and help to fight disease.
